The Eyes Have It

The Red Eye

The red eye is red because its conjunctival and episcleral vessels are engorged. They get that way because the eye or its surrounding soft tissues are inflamed.

There are many causes of red eye, but eight conditions should grab your attention because they can threaten vision or life:

  • Keratitis
  • Anterior Uveitis
  • Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma
  • Scleritis/episcleritis
  • Endophthalmitis
  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis
  • Orbital Cellulitis
  • Orbital Tumor
