Candidiasis: Retinal and Vitreous Infiltrates This yellow-white mass is sitting in the vitreous cavity, having started in the retina as a metastatic deposit of candida. The organisms eat up the retina locally, then spread into the overlying vitreous. Such "fungal balls" are found in 30% of patients with candidemia consequent to chronic parenteral hyperalimentation, hemodialysis, major surgery, or burns. Ocular involvement may precede identification from blood cultures.
What to do?In suspected candidemia, retinal examination can provide helpful evidence.Vitrectomy and instillation of antifungals may be necessary to preserve vision.
