Dial-up with CMD

Last Updated: January 14, 2004

Using the Novell client and the Compatibility Mode Driver (CMD) to communicate with IPX servers over IP.

We are replacing NetWare/IP for dial-up with Pure IP (NCP/IP) with NetWare 5. This service uses the IP implementation in NetWare 5 to enable connection to NetWare servers, both NetWare 4 and NetWare 5, over IP. This is an ideal solution for use with our campus modem pool, which only supports IP.

The service is provided on ITD's NetWare infrastructure servers and so requires no server component on your part. The newest client (for 95 or NT, this is not available on the Mac, sorry) must be installed in compatibility mode to use it.

Unfortunately, there is an issue with client configurations, as over dial-up DNS names in the client configuration are not resolved. The following instructions will allow you to use the service with a hard-coded IP number, but have the DNS name configured for use when the bug in the client is fixed (this is a known bug that is being addressed by Novell Engineering).

Enabling the Novell client for access to campus via IP on Win95/98/NT/2000

  1. reinstall the current version of Novell's Client32 (v3.1 for 95/98, v4.6 for NT) using Custom Installation
  2. on the Network Protocols screen, choose 'IP with IPX Compatibility'
  3. when the installation is done, choose not to reboot, you still have configuration to do
  4. a. on 95/98 - Network Control Panel - Configuration tab - Compatibility Mode Driver (CMD) – Properties
    b. on NT - Network Control Panel - Adapters tab - Novell IPX Compatibility Adapter - Properties
    c. on W2k - Network and DialUp Connections Control Panel - Right click on LAN Connection and choose Properties - Highlight Novell Compatibility Mode Driver and click the Properties button
  5. uncheck "Use DHCP"
  6. Network Number (Hex): FFFFFFFD
  7. Migration Agents: ipxma.itd.umich.edu
  8. a. on 95/98/NT - OK, OK, then reboot.  You're done!
    b. on W2K - OK, OK, but do NOT reboot
  9. On W2K - If you are running Client32 version 4.71, launch a browser to http://support.novell.com/servlet/filedownload/pub/242234.exe (TID 2957559) and download and extract the file. From the file, copy NWSETUP.DLL to the %SystemRoot%\System32 directory.
  10. Reboot.
Related Note: The Novell GINA does not allow the user to find the "UMICH.EDU (Kerberos Realm)" domain in its drop down box. Novell has been notified of the issue.

To separate the Novell GINA from the Microsoft GINA:

  1. Open the registry editor (Start->Run->regedit.exe). Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon section.
  2. Find the GinaDLL entry, right click it and choose Modify. Under the Value Data section, change NWGINA.DLL to MSGINA.DLL.
  3. Restart the machine. The Microsoft GINA will appear first with the "UMICH.EDU" domain in the dropdown list, then the Netware GINA.

If this is a laptop that will travel between home and work, no problem. NetWare over IP works just fine on campus, so there is no need to have separate configurations. You won't even notice the difference. Over dial-up, the client will start up when the phone connection is made.

Contact netware.support@umich.edu with any questions or problems.
