novell.support@umich.edu New Novell Account Executive - Owen Burritt "Recently Novell has made a few changes to better serve their customers and the University of Michigan. In order to meet the needs of the variety of customers, Novell has verticalized the different markets and their sales reps. One of those verticals is that of higher education. Therefore, we are changing Novell reps and Owen Burritt is our new Account Executive. Owen handles solely the higher education vertical for their Midwest region and is responsible for only 13 universities in which U of Michigan is one of those. This will provide the U of Michigan a dedicated resource and one which has the knowledge of the education market. He is looking forward to working with the University and it's future endeavors." "Strategic Direction - Why Pharmacy chose Novell" - Ed Thierbach Ed Thierbach from Pharmacy discusses his recent evaluation of Novell Netware, OES and other operating systems. His presentation is available here: Why Pharmacy Chose Novell UPDATE: One of the major issues that Ed raised with regards to his evaluation of the OES Linux product was the current lack of support for TSM backups of NSS volumes and that it was a "show stopper" for them, a sentiment that was echoed by other campus units. Owen Burritt, our new Novell Account Executive, took this feedback and was able to determine that Novell Storage Product Management has been working to resolve this issue and that the engineering work is in process and IBM should have something later this year. If anyone would also be interested in meeting with him to learn more about this development, please let us know at novell.support@umich.edu Novell Product Lifecycles - Upgrades and Updates There was a discussion of current important upgrades and updates that campus administrators need to be aware of and begin considering there upgrade plans for. The Novell Support Lifecycle page can be found here, documenting currently supported products and end-of-life dates: Novell Products - Support Lifecycle ITCS has made a document available to assist those needing to upgrade their DS 7 servers to eDirectory, or those wishing to upgrade to the latest version of eDirectory supported in the Michigan tree. eDirectory upgrade instructions can be found here: eDirectory 8.7.3.7 Upgrade Procedure Also it was pointed out that Netware 5.1 and Netware 6 have reached end of life status and that the only currenlty fully supported Netware version is Netware 6.5. Some administrators shared that they have had good experiences with the most recent release of Netware 6.5 SP4a, with regards to reliability and stability. Novell Support Contract - UPDATE Due to the positive response to and experiences with our 3 month support trial we have decided to proceed with purchasing an enhanced Novell support agreement for campus. More details will be announced soon, such as how contributers can access the support and how non-contributers can purchase incidents. If your unit is interested in contributing to the Support Contract, please contact novell.support@umich.edu ZENWorks 7 Desktop Management - discussion and future meetings There has been a great deal of interest of late in the ZENWorks 7 Desktop Management product and there was discussion of forming a ZENworks sub-group and holding a meeting to discuss the product and departmental deployments.
