Meeting Notes

Please send any corrections or omissions to netware.support@umich.edu

New Novell Account Executive

Frank Miklos (fmiklos@novell.com) was introduced as our new Account Executive. Frank was not given much information from our previous AE, Jennifer Malinski. If anyone has had conversations or meetings with Jennifer in the past and was expecting something back from her, you will need to contact Frank and let him know so that he can follow through.

ID Provisioning Update – We've gone production!

On January 9th of 2004 the DirXML Identity Provisioning system became a production service as The School of Nursing DirXML driver was activated. LANNOS is already working with ITCS Desktop Support to create a driver to manage accounts for ITCS Staff. LANNOS is ready to receive requests from other departments that wish to join the DirXML service.

Password Change Web Page

LANNOS and Web Services are working together to create a web page that will allow users to authenticate using their kerberos credentials and manage their eDirectory and Active Directory passwords. This we page will facilitate synchronizing passwords or setting them to different values. A test site is expected be completed by February 18th.

Due to the complications presented with asking a user of eDirectory or Active Directory to identify where in eDirectory or Active Directory their user object exists, this web page will only serve to manage passwords for users that are centrally provisioned.

Kerberos Update

We have received the second beta refresh of the Novell Kerberos Login Method. This refresh includes many new features and changes, including a new schema. LANNOS is actively working on a plan to move from the old schema to the new schema. This may mean that the login method will be unusable for a short period of time while the Michigan Tree is transitioned.

This new version also changed the way the different kerberos credential caches inter operate. There are some issues here that still need to be sorted out and LANNOS has engaged the developers to this end.

MyServer

LANNOS announced a new pricing model now available for the MyServer (formerly NetWare File and Print) service provided by LANNOS. Please contact ITD-NWFP@umich.edu if you are interested in discussing this new pricing model.

Lunch-n-Learn

LANNOS has been working with Frank to continue providing the Lunch-n-Learn sessions. With the somewhat abrupt transition to Frank, we were unable to coordinate a session in January. However, we are already planning a session in March. With Brainshare also being in March, the availability of Novell personnel is slim. Therefore, the exact date of the session is yet to be determined. The topic will be Novell Storage Solutions.

NetWare 6.5 Update

LANNOS has now posted documentation on its website for upgrading to NetWare 6.5 as well as installing a new NetWare 6.5 server. Please do not hesitate to review Novell's documentation on installing and upgrading to NetWare 6.5.

Service Pack 1a is now available and on the NetWare volume. The schema extensions required will be installed into the Michigan Tree on February 10th.

CMD Future

As announced last month, the redundant CMD Migration Agent service that ITCS has provided for some time to allow remote access to IPX only servers was degraded to a one-off service. The number of IPX only servers is diminishing and NetWare 4.x is to become an unsupported product early this summer.

LANNOS is not able to determine the number of users using this service and requests that admins pass on information about their users that use this service so that they can put together a plan for how this service will be supported into the future.

SLP TCP=ON/OFF

LANNOS has discovered that since the upgrade of the redundant SLP Directory Agent servers to NetWare 6.5 and SLP v2, there are some circumstances where having SLP TCP=ON set can cause SLP to nut function properly. This applies only to NetWare 5.x servers. LANNOS requests that everyone with NetWare 5.x servers type 'display slp services' at their console screen and check to see that a large number of services are returned (+500). If far fewer are displayed then 'set slp tcp=off' and send an email to netware.suport@umich.edu with information about your servers OS, DS, and SLP.NLM versions.

Once LANNOS has determined the exact circumstances of this problem, the SLP configuration web pages will be updated.

Brainshare

For the first time in a long time, LANNOS will not be attending Brainshare. This means that the content of the Brainshare Review during the April NetWare Administrators meeting will be completely dependent on departmental contributions. LANNOS encourages anyone and everyone who is going to Brainshare to take very good notes. If you would rather not stand up in front of the group in April, a LANNOS representative will be happy to present your notes to the audience.

Miscellaneous items

ZEN 3.2 - on the Support Life Cycle Product Forecast (http://support.novell.com/lifecycle/forecast.html) as reaching its mature phase (unsupported) by May 31, 2004.

Routine Maintenance – please remember to perform your routine maintenance. A few problems have cropped up lately in departments that could have been easily avoided if routine maintenance had been performed.

iMonitor – this tool was discussed and briefly demonstrated as a tool to detect eDirectory problems before users notice a problem. It was also suggested that an item for a future NetWare Administrators Meeting agenda be a presentation on performing routine maintenance.

AFP Password Change – it was reported that folks were unable to change simple passwords from the Macintosh. After much investigation, it was determined that there is not currently a problem. LANNOS would like to remind everyone that in order to perform this task, the eDirectory and simple password must be identical beforehand.

eDirectory Security Patch – LANNOS needs to investigate further the possible need for patches to versions of eDirectory in use at Michigan that correct a vulnerability in the OpenSSL libraries used.

Linux workstation for administering Novell services – this was discussed as a possible future Lunch-n-Learn session. This will be investigated.
