Why this happens |
Workaround if available |
| Exchange Internal Mail Delivery:
Mail sent from one Exchange user to another is only delivered to the Exchange mailbox. Other mail destinations listed in UMOD do not receive the mail. |
This is working as designed for efficiency and security. Mail will be delivered internally by Exchange if at all possible. Therefore, mail sent to a user of the campus Exchange (which includes LSA, Engineering and Business School) from the campus Exchange will never pass through the UMich mail gateway and so will never get delivered to addresses entered there. |
Use Exchange as your sole or primary mailbox, or at least check it regularly. |
| Mail undeliverable messages returned when sending email to a new Exchange user from Outlook:
Scenario: User1 gets an Exchange mailbox, User2 is a campus Exchange user. Immediately after User1 gets their Exchange mailbox, User2 cannot get mail delivered to User1 - User2 receives an error message back stating that "The following recipient(s) could not be reached... The e-mail account does not exist..." |
User2 is using Exchange in cached mode (i.e. stored locally). This includes caching the address book being used to address mail. This now holds stale, and now inaccurate for new Exchange users, mail delivery information.
This is one good reason to move your unit's users to Exchange in batches, so that refreshing the address book will update the information on many users at once. |
User2 (the sender, not the new mailbox holder) must refresh their local copy of the address book to get the updated information. To do this, while in Outlook, select Tools | Send/Receive | Download Address Book. |
| No free/busy info:
When creating a new appointment in the calendar, the availability of some invitees is not visible. |
While everyone listed in UMOD is listed in the Exchange address book, not everyone has an Exchange account. Therefore, you can invite anyone on campus to a meeting, and they will receive that invitation. However, if they are not an Exchange user within the central campus forest, their availability will not be accessible. You can still invite them, and they can accept, but you can't know (through Exchange) if they are free or busy. |
Simply send the meeting invitation, including the non-Exchange guest. They will receive the invitation and be able to respond. If it is critical that the meeting be scheduled when they are available, check availablity via phone or email. |
| Outlook configured to use RPC/HTTPS hangs after logon:
This happens a small percentage of the time, with some users never seeing this, and others doing so with annoying regularity. |
This is a problem with the network stack in the OS, whereby Outlook attempts to complete the connection before the OS is ready.
|
Two workarounds to try:
- Press the Reconnect button in the Connection Status (hold down Ctrl while clicking the Outlook icon in the system tray to reveal the Connection Status option)
-
Toggle the connected state in Outlook (available through the "Connected" menu in the bottom right corner of Outlook)
