Exchange Technical Library (ETL)
General | Migrating | Self Serve | Exchange 2007
The Exchange Technical Library is a resource for departmental System Administrators and Helpdesk staff. While some end users may find this information useful, it is written at a technical level and may not contain enough detail to be generally helpful. It assumes technical familiarity and comfort with Windows and campus computing.
All of these documents are in pdf format. The date in parentheses following the document name indicates the last time this document was revised. Check back often for new revisions and new documents.

Outlook 2003 Configuration for System Administrators (05/27/08)
| The combination of Outlook and Exchange combination offer many features. This can be both a benefit and a problem. The challenge to Systems Administrators is to understand these choices and to make decisions that provide the best end user experience based on how they use Outlook.
ITCS has some basic recommendations for the most common scenarios. The first part of this document will list these recommendations. The second part will go into details about configuring these options.
Exchange Naming Conventions
(01/04/06)
ITCS has established the following Naming Conventions to be used with the Exchange Service. Exchange objects include mailboxes and groups and have a user account or an alias name. They also have a Display Name, which is what appears in the Global Address List.
It is important to adhere to these naming conventions whether you are creating Exchange mailboxes for your users (Self Serve) or requesting them from ITCS (Full Serve).
Exchange ActiveSync Configuration for System Administrators (09/25/06)
Exchange ActiveSync is an application that enables you to synchronize your e-mail messages, calendar, and contacts lists in your Exchange Server 2003 mailbox with Microsoft Windows Mobile-based devices such as Pocket PC Phones and Pocket PC PDA with wireless Internet. The Palm Treo 650 and 700p which use the Palm OS also includes a version of Exchange ActiveSync, but with limited features. Exchange ActiveSync is native on the devices that support it and does not need to be purchased or installed. This document outlines configuration procedures for common devices that support Exchange ActiveSync. |
Changing the Display Name for Exchange Users (06/23/08)
A User Display Name is an Active Directory attribute of the form "last_name, first_name". For example "Jensen, Barbara". By default, a user's Display Name is created from official name information in the U-M Directory. Because the Display Name is used as the primary lookup field in the Exchange Global Address List (GAL), the last name is placed before the first name, much like a telephone directory. The Display Name is also used as a user's email name in the Exchange/Outlook system. Some users want to change their AD Display Name because of how it appears in e-mail. This document tells how that can be accomplished. |
Publishing a Calendar to the Web for Anonymous Access (11/29/08)
Sometimes you may want to publish a calendar for anyone to view. Perhaps you're using an Exchange calendar to schedule a conference, or want to make the availability of a meeting room public. You can accomplish this by publishing an Exchange calendar to the web. For an example of such a calendar, see the LAN/NOS Event Calendar. This requires a few steps, both at the Exchange server and by the owner of the calendar.
Exchange Calendar Only User Mailbox Configuration for System Administrators (06/02/07)
An Exchange Calendar Only User Mailbox will be useful to people that want Exchange calendars, but prefer to use another e-mail package. Exchange was never intended to be used as a Calendar Only solution, but with some special configuration it can be made to work that way. |
Avoiding data loss when using Entourage during a mailbox move (04/19/07)
In some cases moving a mailbox that is being accessed by Entourage can result in lost items (e-mail, calendar items, contacts). In order to avoid this situation, we recommend the following action be taken in advance of moving an Exchange mailbox accessed via Entourage. |

Understanding & Configuring Mailbox Access Delegation in the UMROOT Forest
(06/19/06)
Each user has a single mailbox on an Exchange Server and that user is considered the owner of the mailbox. However, there are several scenarios that require that other users have access to mailboxes other than their own. This includes resource mailboxes (such as conference rooms) or assistants who need to manage items (such as the calendar) in another user's mailbox. The process of delegation allows for these types of scenarios.

The drivers for the design are high performance, scalability, high availability and reliability. The proposed design meets all of the above criteria. The design includes 2 front end servers and a 6 node cluster of 4 active mailbox servers and 2 failover nodes.

A PST is simply a type of a mailbox file on your local machine that Outlook can use. PST is the filename extension used by Outlook; it can also be known as Personal Folders or Local Folders.
