ISSS offers daily computer backup options to Fleming-networked Mac and Windows computers. Note that most but not all user computers are backed up. Don’t assume your computer is being backed up. Users who want to verify that a computer is being backed up should contact ISSS.

Servers supported and maintained by ISSS are backed up daily; this includes file servers, File Maker, and Meeting Maker servers.
Fleming Mac desktop users are commonly (but not always) setup as mobile account users and thereby the computer is automatically synced to a server for backup. Syncing typically occurs at login and logout on a Mac. Some Fleming Mac desktops are backed up automatically using Bru software; these desktops get backed up at set times of day and don’t get backed up if the computer is off, or not connected to the network at that time.
Fleming Mac laptop users may use Sync software which allows them to backup on demand. This is particularly useful since these users often take the laptop away from the office. A laptop cannot be backed up when it is not connected to the network. Sync will allow the user to backup at their discretion when connected to the network. Bru is another software also available for Mac laptops. However, these laptops only get backed up at set times of the day. Again, if the laptop is not at the office or not connected to the network, then the backing up of files will not take place.
Fleming Windows desktop and laptop users are backed up in one of two ways. Either the computer is synced at login and logout, or Bru software is installed for automated backups. Both methods are automatic but happen at different times. Bru backups occur at set times of day and computers don’t get backed up if the computer is off, or not connected to the network.
What gets backed up?
For servers we typically back up everything on the server.
For user computers we back up user home folders on Macs and user document
and settings folders on Windows. We do not back up music, video, or pictures
on Mac or Windows user computers. If you have work-related music, video,
or pictures that need to be backed up, contact ISSS for options.
When are backups done?
Backups of servers and user computers are done daily but at various times.
User computers are backed up during office hours (except on weekends)
while servers are typically backed up after normal office hours (including
weekends).
How long are backup files stored?
Backup files are rotated every two weeks. We can ONLY go back 2 weeks
to retrieve data.
