ITSS/ITCS Weak Password Checking

Twice each year, Information Technology Security Services (ITSS) and ITCS conduct a test for weak passwords in the University's Kerberos database. This is a cooperative effort supported by the University's IT Security Council.

What Are Weak Passwords?

The automated test identifies uniqnames with Kerberos passwords that could be easily guessed, such as those containing words that can be found in a dictionary or those containing words and phrases associated with the University of Michigan.

How Are People Notified?

ITSS provides lists of the uniqnames of faculty and staff who have weak passwords to security unit liaisons. Those unit liaisons then contact the people in their areas and ask them to change their password to something stronger. If your unit's security liaison asks you to select a stronger UMICH Kerberos password, please do so.

ITCS contacts students who have weak passwords and provides them with instructions for choosing a secure password.
