Domain Name Service (DNS) and Secondary DNS
Hostmaster simplifies computing site administration by handling DNS (Domain Name Service) services, such as the setup of domain name servers and domain name delegation. Hostmaster makes extensive use of the hindsite DNS/DHCP configuration management system. The Domain Name System is a collection of servers on a TCP/IP network. They resolve the text names used by people, such as "itd.umich.edu", into the numbers that computers use, 141.211.100.12. All Internet destinations that can be found by name require an entry in a DNS server.
Dynamic-Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
DHCP stands for "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol" and it is an Internet standard. DHCP's purpose is to enable individual computers on an IP network to extract their configurations from a server (the 'DHCP server') or servers, in particular, servers that have no exact information about the individual computers until they request the information. The most significant piece of information distributed in this manner is the IP address.
E-mail
The university provides an e-mail mailbox to all registered students, faculty, and regular staff on the Ann Arbor campus. The ITCS e-mail services can be accessed in several ways including the web and IMAP and POP clients.
E-mail - Postmaster
Postmaster handles messages from students, faculty, staff and alumni that is sent directly to postmaster@umich.edu. The group also field the "dead letter" rejection messages, which are email messages that for some reason cannot be delivered to their intended recipients.
E-mail Forwarding for Life
E-mail that is sent to eligible students, faculty and staff at their @umich.edu address can be forwarded to any e-mail account they choose. This is because all mail arriving at a @umich.edu address has its uniqname checked in the the U-M Online Directory. The directory contains a forwarding address which is used to forward, or redirect, that mail on to that e-mail forwarding address. Use of the directory for e-mail forwarding means users can keep their @umich.edu address no matter where their e-mail mailbox resides.
E-mail Groups
The U-M Online Directory (UMOD) allows for the creation of collections of names (both local, using uniqnames, and remote, using e-mail addresses) which can be used to send e-mail to a group of people. This is a less sophisticated group mail process than a listserve, but is a little easier to set up.
E-mail Routing
Mail Routing provides a variety of incoming and outgoing mail routing services for University of Michigan e-mail users. Incoming mail to the umich.edu domain is routed through servers which utilize the U-M Online Directory (UMOD) to determine the proper destination for mail sent to "uniqname@umich.edu".
Mail Routing provides an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protool) server for outgoing mail that delivers locally and off campus smtp.mail.umich.edu accepts SMTP, or , connections from users' mail clients, and then routes the users' sent emails to their requested destinations.
Mail Routing also maintains an "MX" server which can be used by departments running their own e-mail systems as a secondary location for mail queuing in the event that the departments primary mail server fails to accept incoming mail.
E-mail Virus Blocking
E-mail is often used to carry viruses across the internet. U-M has filters in place for both incoming and outgoing e-mail to check each message for viral payloads. E-mail messages which are found to carry viruses are deleted without being delivered and without notifying the sender.
E-mail: IMAP
IMAP is the central mailbox storage for e-mail that can be accessed using many different e-mail clients including Mulberry, mail.umich.edu and others.
E-mail: POP
POP mail clients download mail from the central server to your local machine, allowing you to then disconnect from the network to read your e-mail and conserve your dial-in tome.
E-mail: Web
mail.umich.edu gives you secure access to your U-M e-mail from any computer with an internet connection.

Uniqname and Accounts
The most important attribute which ITCS provides for users of its services is a unique identifier (uniqname), a name of up to 8 characters which is enables the provision of private, personalized access to services. A uniqname granted to a person is unique to that individual for their entire relationship with the university—typically it is first granted to a freshman student and used through their student life, but if they become a staff member, or if they graduate and join the faculty, the same uniqname will be retained. If they become retired faculty or staff, or if they wish to use ITCS services as an alumnus, this same uniqname will remain theirs.
A uniqname is protected by an associated password—each service which required authenticated access will require the presentation of the user's password to prove that the claimed identity is, indeed, their. Because the authentication mechanism used is called Kerberos, you will also find the uniqname referred to sometimes as the Kerberos ID (and password).
