May 29, 2009 Update: Marketplace is now closed.
May 7, 2009
ITCS is retiring Marketplace, a service that provided opportunities to buy, sell, and trade various items with other members of the U-M community, as of May 29, 2009. No new postings will be accepted after May 22, and current postings will expire no later than May 29. If you use Marketplace as a resource for locating off-campus housing, look for listings, including sublets, at UM Off-Campus Housing.
Over the past 10 years, numerous no-cost online posting services that offer the same service as Marketplace (usually with greater capacity) have become available. Consequently, usage of Marketplace has dropped significantly, yet still requires dedicated resources. The closing of Marketplace will make it possible for ITCS to devote these resources to higher-priority IT services to the U-M community.
Marketplace, created from a desire to eliminate on-campus spam e-mail, was originally part of the my.umich.edu package introduced in early 2001. The service included e-mail, classifieds, a calendar, and several other applications, but was eventually discontinued. When my.umich.edu shut down, classifieds converted into a freestanding application.
