News from ITCS: Winter Term 2008
IFS Home Directories Increase to 10 GB
You now have 10 times more space to store your files and data online. The size of the IFS home directories provided to faculty, staff, and students as part of the Basic Computing Package has increased from 1 to 10 GB. IFS home directories for U-M Online subscribers have also been increased to 10 GB. You can get to your IFS space via the web using mFile or by using secure file transfer programs.
ITCS piloted the larger home directories for two years, making them available to any IFS user on request. Almost 1,000 people, mostly faculty and graduate students, participated in the pilot.
Pilot participants used the additional space to store medical imaging data, structural analysis data, video files of interviews for social behavior data, and more. IFS is backed up regularly, so users can be sure their data is safe.
Gretchen Kopmanis, a senior desktop support specialist for the Psychology Department, said: "In Psychology, 41 faculty and staff took advantage of the 10 GB pilot program. The ease of [IFS] and the implementation of wireless in LS&A made this program an ideal way for faculty to store their class lectures and presentations."
Group home directories will remain at 1 GB, with the option to purchase more space in increments of 1 GB. Class home directories will remain at 4 GB, with more space available at no charge on request. Contact the ITCS Accounts Office (764-8000, Option 3, or itcs.accounts@umich.edu) to request larger group or class home directories.
If you need additional IFS space for large-scale statistical analysis using the ITCS Statistics and Computation machines, contact the IFS Support Team. Those interested in piloting the use of IFS directories larger than 10 GB for needs that further the academic or research mission of the University are also invited to contact the IFS Support Team. You can reach the team at ifs.support@umich.edu.
The University of Michigan AFS cell, which provides the IFS service, is one of the biggest AFS cells in the world. It supports 211,685 users with 17.5 terabytes of storage space. ITCS staff members contribute support and code changes to the larger educational community of AFS users and encourage and facilitate the use of AFS worldwide. The deployment of mFile, the web-based interface to AFS developed by ITCS, has made it easier for people to get to their files and data from multiple locations and has increased use of IFS at U-M.
