May 2008 Changes to Web Mail

The May 2008 Web Mail upgrade fixes a number of bugs and includes some small enhancements. Icons and other graphic elements have been given a somewhat more updated look, and there are a couple of new features.

Some of the New Features

  • View Several Messages at Once
This new feature lets you view several selected messages in one window.

Screen shot: The messages will appear one right after the other in the same window.'

  • Address Completion from Directory and Address Book
This new feature saves you some typing when you are composing a new message. As you type, web mail compares what you've typed first with a list of your most frequently messaged recipients, then the entries in your address book, and then with entries in the U-M Online Directory (first uniqnames, then common names, and then group names). It then provides you with a list of matches from which you can select.

  • Search all Folders for New Messages with Virtual INBOX
Virtual INBOX is a saved search that does away with the need to search every mailbox for messages marked as new. Instead, all currently subscribed mailboxes are searched for new messages and the results are displayed in a single mailbox.

Screen shot: From the Open Folder pop-up list, select Virtual INBOX.

Some Changes You Might Notice

  • Compose Message/New Message Icon
The name of the Compose Message icon has changed to New Message.

  • Spell Check Is More Interactive
Whereas the previous version of web mail's spell checker presented you with a list of suggestions in a separate window, the new version identifies possible errors right in the message and lets you click each one for a list of options.

To use the enhanced spell checker, draft your new message, then click Check Spelling.
