Web Mail Upgrade to Fix Bugs, Provide Enhancements

May 6, 2008

An upgrade of the University's web mail application, mail.umich.edu, will fix a number of bugs and provide some enhancements and new features. The upgrade will be performed between 11:00 p.m. Thursday, May 8, and 2:00 a.m., Friday, May 9.

Here are a few of the changes that web mail users may notice:

  • Redesigned icons in the tool bar and elsewhere.
  • The Compose icon has been renamed New Message.
  • New directory search feature in the New Message window. As you type the name of a message recipient, web mail checks your address book and the U-M Online Directory and fills in the rest of the name and address for you.

For more about the changes, see the May 2008 Web Mail Changes List.

ITCS has received a number of requests from web mail users for an interface to web mail that is more flexible and interactive. For example, people would like to be able to drag and drop messages.

ITCS staff members are researching what mail software will work with the ITCS IMAP mail service and hope to be able to offer a more dynamic web mail product, in addition to the one currently offered, later this year.

In the meantime, you can select your own customized look and feel for web mail from a set of options. To find out how to do this, see Customizing web.mail.umich.edu: Setting Preferences with the Options Feature (S4333).
