Directory to Display Preferred Names
Set Preferred Names in Wolverine Access
Beginning April 25, you can choose to use a preferred name instead of your legal name in some University systems in accordance with a new preferred names policy. Preferred names can be set using Wolverine Access.
Names to Start Appearing in Directory May 1-2
The U-M Online Directory will begin displaying preferred names on May 1. Michigan Administrative Services (MAIS) sends weekly updates of staff and student data from its M-Pathways systems to ITCS for the directory. The first update containing preferred names will be sent on Tuesday, May 1. Because this update includes a change to the directory, it may take longer than usual to process and may not be completed until sometime May 2.
From then on, changes to preferred names will be incorporated on a weekly basis when the regular data updates are received from MAIS. This means there will be a delay of up to a week from the time you set a preferred name in Wolverine Access to the time that name appears in your directory entry.
For now, Ann Arbor students and all current faculty and staff are the only ones able to set preferred names in Wolverine Access and have them appear in the directory. MAIS does not send data about retirees, alumni, and some others to the directory in its weekly data updates. The new M-Community enterprise directory, currently in the early development stages will make it possible for others to set and use preferred names.
What You'll See in the Directory
When you display a person's entry in the directory via the web (http://directory.umich.edu), a new field called Name will appear immediately below the uniqname. This field will appear only in the entries of people who are eligible to set preferred names. People whose only affiliation with the University is as alumni, for example, will not have this field in their entries.
The person's legal name will be displayed in that field unless a preferred name has been set. If a preferred name has been set, that name will be displayed instead.
Preferred names will also be added to the list of Also Known As names in the person's entry. Names added to this list are not automatically deleted. You can contact the ITCS Accounts Office to request that a name be removed from your list.
