Try TV on Your Computer with the UM IPTV Investigation

May 9, 2007

Want to watch TV on your computer? Faculty, staff, and students are invited to try a new Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service that ITCS is investigating and provide feedback regarding its usefulness and quality via a short online survey form.

IPTV allows University broadband users to receive live, quick-start Internet television. It uses technology that was developed by Sugih Jamin, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science. The service is being tested through June 29.

As a part of the investigation, ITCS is working with campus representatives to see if users receive educational benefits from IPTV and to construct an appropriate funding model. This information will help determine whether or not IPTV will continue after June.

Feedback from participants thus far has been positive. Survey responders have reported the picture quality to be excellent and said the software is easy to install and use. The project's staff would like to hear from more faculty and staff concerning possible educational and research needs that IPTV could meet. They would also like to hear from units that may be interested in providing content.
