Print to Campus Printers from Your Computer with mPrint

September 24, 2007

Students, faculty, and staff can use mPrint to print to more than 200 campus printers from wherever they are—their room or apartment, a friend's place, a classroom, the library, a favorite cafe, and so on. They can then stop by the printer to which they printed and find their printout ready to be picked up.

MPrint has been available as a pilot service for the past two years, but was released as a full production service last week. It can now accept all Microsoft Office files, including Word and Excel, for printing. In pilot mode, it only accepted PDF and Postscript files.

"This concept is somewhat new to college campuses, and Michigan's version is on the front edge," said Kevin Jones, assistant manager for Campus Computing Sites.

Pages printed through mPrint are deducted from people's Basic Computing Package printing allocation.

To use mPrint, go to the mPrint page, click the mPrint Login link, select a printer, upload the file you want to print, and print it. Complete instructions are provided in this document:

Last year 26 million pages were printed in the Campus Computing Sites. In its pilot program last year, mPrint accounted for 300,000 of those pages.

"This will provide a cost savings for students," said Robert Jones, Sites printing coordinator. "There's no need for them to buy a printer. They will save on the cost of paper and ink cartridges."

He explained, "If a student is writing a paper at a coffee shop, they can log in, select to print it at Angell Hall, then grab it on the way to class."
