Kerberos 4 to Kerberos 5 Transition

To provide good computing security to the U-M community, ITCS works closely with the Information Technology Security Services (ITSS) Office to identify and implement improvements to key security technologies. One of these security improvements was completion of the transition from Kerberos 4, now considered obsolete, to Kerberos 5.

This transition had three parts:

• Turning Off K4. Completed March 2007.
• Implementing Kerberos Pre-Authentication. Completed June 2007.
• Implementing AES. AES was implemented in March 2006; there are no immediate plans for phasing out DES.
