Configuring IMAP E-Mail Clients for Exchange 2007

S4354 • March 2008

This document is for those who prefer to access the ITCS Exchange Service using an IMAP e-mail client such as Mulberry, Thunderbird, Pine, or Apple Mail. Please understand, however, that you will only receive maximum benefit from your Exchange account by configuring Microsoft Outlook (Windows) or Entourage (Macintosh) for Exchange. Refer to Additional Resources for information on setting up those two programs for Exchange.

NOTE: Some campus units — including the Business School, Business and Finance/MAIS, and Institute for Social Research (ISR) — offer their own services that may require different configuration information.

IMPORTANT! The ITCS Exchange Service now routes IMAP and other e-mail clients through Exchange 2007 Client Access Servers (CAS). Because of this:

  • the SMTP (outgoing mail) setting exchange.umich.edu will no longer work, so e-mail clients using this configuration will not be able to send e-mail. If your program's SMTP setting shows exchange.umich.edu, refer to SMTP Configuration Options. If you're not sure how to check this, please refer to E-Mail Settings for Authenticated SMTP.

If the client is configured for anything other than exchange.umich.edu and it works, no change is necessary.

  • although the current incoming mail (IMAP) setting — exchange.umich.edu — will continue to work, we recommend changing to our new preferred IMAP settingimap-exchange.umich.edu when updating the SMTP setting.
  • For new configurations, please always use imap-exchange.umich.edu.
  • Pine users will need to reconfigure Pine.

SMTP Configuration Options

We recommend either of two SMTP settings:

  • smtp-exchange.umich.edu
This option is best for Exchange users because, once configured, it does not require any extra effort on their part.

The following steps are based on Windows Mail (Vista).
HINT: If you have trouble finding the SMTP settings for your IMAP e-mail program, refer to E-Mail Settings for Authenticated SMTP which covers many popular programs. However, make sure you enter the settings noted below.

    1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
    2. In the Internet Accounts window, double-click your Exchange account.
    3. In the exchange.umich.edu Properties window:
      1. Click the Advanced tab.
        1. Advanced tab window

        2. Activate the checkbox next to "This server requires a secure connection."
        3. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, enter 587.
      2. Click the Servers tab.
        1. Servers tab window

        2. In the Incoming mail (IMAP) field, enter imap-exchange.umich.edu.
        3. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, enter smtp-exchange.umich.edu.
        4. Activate the checkbox next to "My server requires authentication."
        5. Click Settings.
          1. Outgoing Mail Server window

          2. In the Outgoing Mail Server window, make sure the radio button next to "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is active.
          3. Click OK
      3. Back in the exchange.umich.edu Properties window, click OK.
    4. Back in the Internet Accounts window, click Closed and save your new settings when prompted.
  • smtp.mail.umich.edu
This is the authenticated SMTP address for the ITCS IMAP e-mail service. However, users selecting this option will need to authenticate twice, once with their Exchange password to access their Exchange account and again with their UMICH/Kerberos password in order to send mail.

Information on configuring popular e-mail clients using this method is available at E-Mail Settings for Authenticated SMTP.
HINT: Change the Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) setting to imap-mail.umich.edu at the same time.

Pine users will need to reconfigure their settings. These instructions assume Pine was previously correctly configured.
