E-Mail Configuration: Windows Mail in Vista

With the Windows Vista operating system, Windows Mail replaces Outlook Express. Follow the instructions here if you use the ITCS IMAP e-mail service.
TIP: Make sure you keep your software up-to-date by using Microsoft Windows Update.
- Opening Windows Mail for the first time starts a wizard to configure a new account.
NO WIZARD? To get started, please see the Appendix
- In the Your Name window, enter your name as you want it to appear in the From field of your e-mails. Click Next.
- In the Internet E-mail Address window, enter your U-M e-mail address — your uniqname followed by @umich.edu; for example, bjensen@umich.edu. Click Next.
- In the Set up e-mail servers window:

- from the Incoming e-mail server type pop-up menu, select IMAP.
- in the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server field, enter mail.umich.edu.
- in the Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) server field, enter smtp.mail.umich.edu.
- click the checkbox next to Outgoing server requires authentication.

- In the Internet Mail Logon window:

- in the E-mail username field, enter your uniqname.
- Do not enter your password. You'll be prompted for your password when you log in to Windows Mail.
- Uncheck the Remember password checkbox.
WARNING! Entering your password and leaving the Remember password checkbox active puts your password at risk and allows anyone with access to your computer to read your e-mail and send messages in your name.
- click Next.
- In the Congratulations window:

- check the checkbox next to Do not download my e-mail at this time.
- click Finish to start Windows Mail.
- In the Windows Mail dialog box about downloading folders, click No.

- In the Windows Mail program, under the Tools menu, select Accounts.

- In the Internet Accounts window:

- select mail.umich.edu (default).
- click Properties.
- In the mail.umich.edu Properties window:

NOTE: Although the following steps appear to be out of order, you must click the checkboxes prior to changing a number.
- click the Advanced tab.
- directly under Outgoing mail (SMTP), click the checkbox next to This service requires a secure connection (SSL).
- in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, enter 465.
- directly under Incoming mail (IMAP), click the checkbox next to This service requires a secure connection (SSL).

- in the User name field, enter your uniqname.
- in the Password field, enter your UMICH Kerberos password the one you use with Wolverine Access.
- uncheck the Remember my credentials checkbox.
WARNING! Never check the Remember my credentials checkbox. Doing so puts your password at risk and allows anyone with access to your computer to read your e-mail and send messages in your name.
- click OK.
- You'll receive an information window indicating your e-mail folders are being downloaded. You do not need to do anything. When completed, you'll be returned to the Windows Mail program.

- To see your e-mail, click Inbox under mail.umich.edu.
HINT: Windows Mail defaults to your Local Folders Inbox; if you don't see your e-mail, make sure you're looking at your mail.umich.edu folders.
