Follow the instructions here if you use the ITCS IMAP e-mail service.
ITCS EXCHANGE SERVICE NOTE: If you use Outlook with the ITCS Exchange Service, follow the configuration instructions in Setting Up Outlook/Exchange on a Windows Computer.
TIP: Make sure you keep up-to-date with Microsoft Office Updates (Outlook is part of Microsoft Office).
- From the Tools menu, select E-mail Accounts.
- In the E-mail Accounts window, select View or change existing e-mail accounts. (If you are creating a new account, provide the same setting information listed below.)
- Click Next.
- From the list of e-mail accounts, click the name of the account you use to get e-mail from ITCS's e-mail service so that it is highlighted, then click Change.
- Make these settings:
In the Your Name box, type your name.
In the E-mail Address box, type uniqname@umich.edu (where you have replaced uniqname with your own uniqname).
In the User Name box, type your uniqname.
For Incoming mail server (IMAP), put mail.umich.edu.
For Outgoing mail server (SMTP), put smtp.mail.umich.edu.
- Click the More Settings button.
- Click the Outgoing Server tab.
Check the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication checkbox.
Also make sure the Use same settings as my incoming mail server radio button is selected.
- Click the Advanced tab.
IMAP Users: Under the Incoming server (IMAP) heading, put a checkmark in the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox.
POP Users: Use port number 995.
Make certain that the Incoming server (IMAP) port is set to 993.
Under the Outgoing server (SMTP) heading, check the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) checkbox. The port number should be 465.
TROUBLESHOOTING TIP: If you are unable to send mail, try using port number 587 instead. Microsoft mail products generally work best when set to port 465, but, in some rare cases, port 587 works.
