Why Use Eudora?
Eudora is a full-featured e-mail program that’s an especially good choice for those with portable computers who use dial-in connections. Those who always read their e-mail from the same computer may also prefer it.
You can save on connection charges and other expenses such as long distance charges. With Eudora, you can connect to the network only long enough to download your e-mail. Once disconnected, you can read, reply to, and compose new messages. When you are ready, connect again long enough to send messages and download new ones.
CAUTION! POP-3 e-mail clients like Eudora download your messages to your hard drive and then delete them from the e-mail server. Your messages only exist on your computer. Because of this, you should:
- regularly back up your Eudora e-mail folder to avoid losing your messages to a hard drive failure or inadvertant deletion.
- not use Eudora on a shared computer, someone else’s computer, or on a publicly available computer because it copies your e-mail onto that hard drive where it is available to anyone using that computer.
If you access your e-mail from multiple computers, we recommend you use mail.umich.edu, Pine, or Mulberry, which copies your messages to your computer but also leaves them on the server. However, if you use any of these after using Eudora, you will only see messages that arrived since you last connected with Eudora.
Obtaining a Eudora License
Faculty and staff should first check with their department to see if it maintains a site license. If not, you can request a license from ITCS Software Licensing and Distribution (SWLD), but it must be paid with a University account.
Students and other individuals can purchase it at the Eudora website.
Configuring Eudora for U-M
If your department's support people do not install Eudora, please follow these steps after installing the program.
