Using Mulberry 3 for E-Mail

U-M Information Technology Central Services * S4312 * March 2007

Mulberry is an e-mail program for both Macintosh and Windows computers. It looks essentially the same on both platforms. It can be used in conjunction with the e-mail service provided by Information Technology Central Services (ITCS) as part of the Basic Computing Package.

Like Pine—another ITCS-supported e-mail program—Mulberry is an IMAP (Interactive Mail Access Protocol) client. IMAP allows software running on your computer to access a server computer where your mailbox is stored. Because your e-mail is on an IMAP server, you can access the same mailbox and folders from different locations.

NOTE: The current version of Mulberry is 3.1.5. The screen shots in this document were made using the previous version of Mulberry, so you may notice some slight differences between the screen shots and what you see on your computer.

Obtaining, Installing, and Configuring Mulberry

See the Mulberry section of Configuring Your E-Mail Program to Connect to the ITCS E-Mail Service (S4321) for details. Mulberry can be downloaded from the ITCS Mulberry Support page.

ATTENTION CAEN USERS! See Appendix A: Configuring Mulberry to Work With CAEN and Other Campus E-Mail Servers at the end of this document for instructions on making Mulberry work with CAEN servers.

Adding Your Name and Setting a Signature

Before you begin to use Mulberry, you should add your name and (optionally) an e-mail signature to Mulberry's preferences.
  1. Open Mulberry.
  2. Log in with your uniqname and UMICH Kerberos password.
  3. ATTENTION DIAL-IN USERS! If you are using a dial-in connection, Mulberry may ask, "Do you want to start this session in disconnected mode?" Click Connected. (You must be connected to the Internet to change your preferences, because your preferences are stored on a server machine rather than on your own computer.)

ATTENTION CAEN USERS! Be sure to leave the Kerberos realm set as UMICH.EDU. If you change the realm to ENGIN.UMICH.EDU, authentication will fail.

  4. From the File menu, choose Preferences. (Mac OS X users, select Preferences from the Mulberry menu.) A Remote Preferences window will open.
  5. On the right side of the Remote Preferences window will be a radio button for Simple. If it is not selected, click it.
  6. In the Real Name field, enter your full name as you wish it to appear on your e-mail messages.
  7. Near the bottom of the window, click the Set Signature button. The Set Signature dialog box will open.
  8. In the Set Signature box, enter the text you wish to appear at the bottom of each e-mail message you send. Then click the OK button in the lower right hand corner of the window.
  9. In the lower right corner of the Remote Preferences window, click the Save Default button.
  10. In the lower right corner of the Remote Preferences window, click the OK button.

Getting to Your E-Mail

(You must be connected to the Internet to get your new mail.)

  4. Your INBOX will open. Click any message to view it.
  5. Screen shot of Mulberry window with INBOX.
  6. HINT: You can sort your messages by message number, message flag, from/to, date sent, and thread (a message and replies to it). Click the column header you want to sort by.

Message flags next to each message provide additional information.
Message Flag What It Means
New message (one that has arrived since the last time you checked your mailbox).
Unseen message (one that you have not yet opened).
Opened message (one that you have opened at least once).
Answered message (one that you have replied to).
Deleted message (one that you have marked for deletion).

Changing the Way Mulberry Looks

While version 3 of Mulberry uses a three-pane window, previous versions displayed the mailbox list, message list, and the message itself in separate windows. You can choose whether you want a three-pane window or separate windows. You can also choose how you want the panes arranged in the three-pane display.

All the screen shots in this document were made using Mulberry's three-pane view.

Working With Your Messages

Double-click any message to open it. You can click buttons in the message window to navigate among your messages and get more information about each message itself.

To delete the selected message

  2. The message will be flagged for deletion, and the Delete button will change to an Undelete button.
