How do I arrange to use the campus DHCP service?
Contact hostmaster@umich.edu if you are interested in getting DHCP on your campus network or if you want more information about ITCS's DHCP service.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a service that allows machines to get their IP addresses and other information assigned by the network themselves rather than having to have this done manually by a person. Basically, it allows a network administrator to attach a computer to a U-M network and then have that computer figure out its own configuration for connecting to the Internet automatically.
The ITCS Hostmaster Group offers DHCP service for any school or department network on campus. This service is considered part of the campus computing infrastructure and is free of charge.
Dynamic ranges, static assignments, and even a basic web interface that administrators can use to do their own static administration are available. DHCP service is provided using ISC's DHCP software from a variety of infrastructure boxes located around campus to minimize disruption in the event of a network outage.
