How do I transfer ownership of a directory group?

Transferring Ownership of a Group that You Own

Basically, the current owner adds new group owners and then deletes him or herself.

  1. Search for the group in the directory.
  2. Click the Bind button, and log in with your uniqname and UMICH Kerberos password.
  3. Click the Modify button.
  4. Scroll down the page to the Owner heading.
  5. In the Owner box, type the uniqname(s) of the new owner(s).
  6. Scroll down to the bottom and click the Save Changes button.

You can then remove yourself as owner—or one of the new owners can remove you. Be aware that once you are removed as owner, you will no longer be able to make changes to the group.

  1. Click the Modify button. (If you are no longer bound to the directory, you will need to click the Bind button and log in first.)
  2. Scroll down the page to the Owner heading.
  3. Check the checkbox next to your uniqname.
HINT: You may also want to remove yourself as a member of the group. Under the University Members heading, check the checkbox next to your uniqname.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom and click the Save Changes button.

If You Are Not the Owner

Only the owner(s) can make changes to a group. Contact the owner(s) to ask that new owners be added to a group.

You can contact the owner(s) of a group by sending e-mail to

groupname-owners@umich.edu

where you have substituted the name of the group for groupname. For example, to contact the owners of a group named no.such.group, you would send mail to no.such.group-owners@umich.edu.

If the Group Owner(s) Cannot Be Reached

If you get no response from the group owner(s), contact the directory administrators (diradmin@umich.edu) and ask them to add new owners.
