Entourage FAQ: E-Mail

When I delete attachments, why doesn't the size of my Exchange account decrease?

HINT: Find out how to check your account's size.

When you receive attachments in e-mail, Entourage downloads a copy to your computer. The original attachment stays in your e-mail account on the Exchange server.

Under the Message menu, you can select Remove All Attachments, but there's a gotcha. You're only deleting the attachment downloaded to your computer, not the one on the Exchange server. It's still taking up space in your account.

Unfortunately, there's no simple way for Entourage users to remove attachments from the server:

  1. Drag the e-mail message with the attachment to the Inbox under Folders on My Computer. That copies the message to your local Inbox.
  2. Image with same information from step 1.

  3. With the message in your Exchange Account Inbox still selected, click the Delete icon.
  4. Image with same information from step 2.

  5. Under Folders on My Computer, click the Inbox.
    1. View the message with the attachment that you just copied.
    2. Under the Message menu, click Remove All Attachments.
    3. Image with same information from steps 3a and b.

    4. In the "Are you sure..." dialog box, click Delete.
    5. Image with same information from step 3c.

    6. Drag the message to the folder in your Exchange Account where you want it stored.
    7. Image with same information from step 3d.

    8. If you wish, delete the message from your Folders on My Computer Inbox.
