What Is Authenticated SMTP?

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is used for sending e-mail. Most people at U-M use ITCS's SMTP servers (smtp.itd.umich.edu) to send their e-mail. These machines do not currently require authentication; in fact, they require that e-mail clients be configured to not use authentication. Access to the smtp.itd.umich.edu machines will be turned off in June 2006.

Authenticated SMTP requires a user to authenticate to the SMTP server to send mail. It provides a secure connection for submitting mail. The address for the new authenticated SMTP machines is smtp.mail.umich.edu.
